Being a single mother is a real pressure especially if your child is a boy; however, no matter what your child is, it is your responsibility to provide a loving and caring atmosphere so that your child can grow up properly. Even though you are a single mother, your male child would most likely need an advice from a male parent as he grows up. A father figure is still needed because there will still be some things that a male child would need. Therefore, as a single mother, you should also be able to provide male influence to your child.

A single mother would be effective in upbringing her male child if she is able to provide her child with all the things that he needs. There are a lot of factors that can actually affect the efficacy of being a single mother in a male child. Such factors would include having a father figure or male influence, having other children or presence of siblings, and a new male that will enter the family.

Certain circumstances can greatly affect the male child’s growth

There is a significant difference between a child who never knew his father ever since he was born and a child who is frequently visited by his father as he grows up. Aside from that, there will also be some differences between a male child who is a result of single mother adoption and single mothers who opted to have artificial insemination than male child who were a result of teenage pregnancy.

There are also other circumstances like a male child who frequently sees his parent quarreling about divorce and would eventually divorce wherein the male child will have to move with his single mother. On the other hand, a male child may also experience trauma when he frequently sees his mother violently battered by his father before the mother have fought for her rights and filed divorce. However, it will be a whole lot different if the male child came from a family that separated peacefully and have agreed terms that are favorable for both parties.

It is not good for a child who frequently sees his parents quarrel and argue about different matters because it can actually cause behavioral problems that will be manifested especially in school. School performance will greatly be affected and it could even add up to the trauma that the child is experiencing. Additionally, a male child has more behavioral problems compared to a female child.

Male influences can affect the growth of a male child raised by a single mother

The Journal of Marriage and Family have conducted a study on male children who were raised by single mothers. Social male influences are recommended for the proper growth and development of the child as long as the influences are good. If the male influence to the young boy provides quality time and good values, then the child will grow up normally.

Involvement of a father figure as the son grows up is a great help in the child’s normal growth and development. Usually, sons who have “social” fathers or father figures in whom they look up to and seek for advice perform the same as sons from a non divorced family. This study was actually conducted by the University of Michigan during 1985.

A latest study that was conducted in the year 2008 suggested that male teachers create a big influence in their male students. Usually, these male teachers would serve as an inspiration for male students. For single mothers, it would be best to let your male child be involved with church youth groups while joining single mother programs wherein you can also get some ideas on how to raise your male kid properly. For single mothers who are dating, you need to ensure that your date actively participates in providing care to your child as well as being a good male influence to your child.

You can only expect a positive result to single parenting if you provide your child with the best possible upbringing that you can give. Keep in mind that even though you are a single parent, it is very important that you provide a positive environment to your child.
